A responsive e-commerce web design & build incorporating variable product listings, online payment and extensive delivery options for Thames Fruit & Veg, a Newton Aycliffe greengrocer.
The Brief
Thames Fruit & Veg are based in Newton Aycliffe, Darlington with a delivery route that encompasses Darlington, County Durham & North Yorkshire. They asked us to design and build a responsive, easy-to-use e-commerce website which incorporated variable product listings, a postcode based delivery option and an online shopping cart and payment solution.
Our Solution: E-Commerce Web Design & Build
Thames Fruit and Veg already had a website but it just wasn’t working. After carrying out an intensive website audit on their existing website, we recommended that it would be cheaper for them to ditch it completely and design and build a new responsive e-commerce website from scratch.
The new website was built using the WordPress Content Management system with a bespoke layout design. Real-life pictures of actual products give the website instant appeal while a simplifed menu and anchor (sometimes known as jump) links between relevant sections of the website make it easy for customers to find and add items to their shopping cart.
The e-commerce element of the website was created using WooCommerce. Designed to work exclusively with WordPress, WooCommerce is a secure, easy to use open-source e-commerce solution that provides all of the functionality required for small to medium size online retailers.
Stock levels, customer orders and per product sales reports can be downloaded from the website giving the Thames team a daily overview of sales. Customers are also able to create their own accounts, making it simple for them to place recurring orders, add notes concerning their delivery requirements and add extra elements to standard orders.
Search Engine Optimisation
The website content was completely rewritten during the build. This included search-engine optimised text content, web optimisation and the replacement of all of the product images used throughout the website.
WordPress Training
As Thames Fruit & Veg would be managing their website in-house, the website incorporates a modular drag-and-drop page builder. Template pages also provide ready-made page layouts for future use. A series of bespoke “How To” documents were also created, enabling the Thames team to manage the website on a day-to-day basis.
The Result
The first order was placed within a few hours of the website going live on the web. The number of delivery options/areas added to the website has increased as the customer base has grown. Search Engine Optimisation and the addition of Google Analytics means that it is now possible to measure the level of visitor interaction across the website.
UPDATE JAN 2022 – We’re so pleased that Thames Fruit & Veg have asked Wide-Eyed Design to continue working with them to deliver website maintenance, hosting and updating/improving the website as required by them.
UPDATE NOV 2022 – We have just completed adding Christmas Boxes to the website. This included the addition of new products, a Christmas page, a Christmas section on the website Home page and additional delivery dates & areas to various sections of the websites. The fact that the first box was ordered before we’d completed the website updates shows just how popular this website has become!
UPDATE OCT 2023 – We’ve been getting into the festive spirit early by adding the Christmas Boxes to the website. For what this involved just read above. We’re pleased to report that once again, the first box was ordered within minutes of the Christmas Veg Boxes going live!
